Independent travel in Vietnam

After contacting several travel agents in Vietnam, I am hoping this wonderful site can give me a travel company or an agent who will work with me to plan an independent visit to Vietnam. We want to fly into Hanoi and out of HCNC. Would like to take the train and drive between those 2 cities. Rural areas as well as cities, architectural sites and ruins and of course, markets and food are on our list.

I have heard tonkin is great.

I used aurora travel/vietnamstay, also got the recommendation on Fodor's. They were very responsive. I only used them for hotel reservations.

Another vote for Tonkin. I did some of the bookings myself but like Bob they booked internal flights and some hotels at fantastic rates. I would use them again.

We used tonkin tours and they were great. We worked with Nhung to pick where we wanted to go and by what mode of transportation. They were very easy to work with and efficient.

We traveled independently and did not use guides although we used Tonkin to get train tickets. We also used planes which were not very expensive and which we booked on our own.

I used Happy Voyage in Hanoi. Ms. Moon and Mr. Zung were wonderful. They met my budget and took care of me personally the whole trip.

That's nice, but as the OP has already said, he's working with Tonkin.
