How do we get from Luang Prabang to Hanoi?

I came across this wonderful forum and have found it so useful in planning a trip to Asia at the end of this month. We're starting off in Bangkok, then taking a Mekong river boat from Chiang Rai to Luang Prabang. We'd like to go from Luang Prabang to Hanoi by air, stay for four nights in Hanoi, then go back to Bangkok by another airline. So far, the only price we have found is $179 one way from Luang Prabang to Hanoi...we think that this is quite steep. Does anyone know a less expensive way?

Went through the same questions planning our upcoming trip to LP. Unfortunately, it seems airfares in and out of Laos tend to be significantly more expensive than those out of more major hubs. I didn't find anything less than $300ish r/t in and out of Laos.

Good luck!

That price sounds about right and I don't think you'll find it for any less. Its actually 2 flights, LP to Vientianne, and from there on to Hanoi.

Actually there's direct flights from LP to Hanoi on both Vietnam Air and on Lao Air.

will-

I stand corrected. When we flew the same route in May '06 it definitley required a connection in Vientianne.
Good news that its now direct.

Thank you for your replies...since $179 seems the current rate from Luang Prabang to Hanoi, we are also looking at a bus option, though I've had a difficult time finding any information on buses that go from Luang Prabang to Hanoi. Does anyone know of bus options?

The thornetree forum at lonelyplanet.com would have information if there is a bus option. However, unless you have ton of time for your trip, I'd bite the bullet on the flight.

Depending on when you are taking the boat to LP you had better check that they are running. I understand that right now the water levels are so low that boat trips are temporary suspended. They will resume once the rainy season starts.

The fare on Laos Air from LP to Han is I beleive around $115 including tax. Since you probably will be in LP a couple of days check with a travel agent there. Vietnam Air flies the route also. Travel agent should be able to get the best rates between the two.

I would not think about the overland route as it takes too long and to many bus changes. For a account of the trip but in the reverse direction see here

I flew non-stop from LP to Hanoi in November and I think I paid less that $120 on Lao Airline. Do not use the fake Lao airline site to buy your tickets! There is a French company that has built site that looks like a site for Lao Air. It isn't!

You are not able to purchase Lao Airline tickets through the official site but you can check for flight times.

Definitely book your LP-Hanoi ticket through a travel agent. Many people on this board use Mr. Eddie and I did as well. Someone will post his contact info or you can use the search function to get in contact with him.

You purchase the tickets and he will have them delivered to your hotel in Bangkok.

Another fantastic website for info on SE Asia is www.travelfish.org. I used it extensively for the 9 weeks I was in SE Asia over two different trips last year.

Happy planning!

Thank you for all the responses...we have found them very useful in our planning. Does anyone have the working email address for Eddie in Bangkok?

Thanks for all the tips from everyone...I heard from Eddie in Bangkok and he was able to get us the price of $130 per person from Luang Prabang to Hanoi (this is cheaper than anything we found from agents in the US). Yipee! We're going to Hanoi!

I haven't done this yet but Bangkok Air tells me with their Discovery Pass it would be $90 to fly from LP to Hanoi via Vietane.

As far as I know Bangkok Air does not fly to Hanoi from anywhere.

The Bangkok Air rep said they do, via Vietane although I haven't booked it so maybe the story would change at that time.

Thanks for all your help!
