Hong Kong Hotel - Conrad
Recently took an Asian trip that included a few days in Hong Kong. We stayed at the Hong Kong Conrad -- what a great hotel! If you can afford it -- or have Hilton points (as we did), this place is worth it. It is located in Pacific Place -- and upscale office and retail complex. Also - a tip -- food and beverages are quite expensive in the Conrad. We discovered (no one volunteered this info), that in the lowest level of Pacific Place mall, there is a food store -- called something like Great Food Hall. It is kind of like a Whole Foods but better. They have everything (bakery , sushi, chocolate counter, deli, etc) including reasonably priced (and good) wine.

Hi Pamo --
I agree that the Conrad is a wonderful place to stay: nice hotel, extremely convenient location.
May I ask how recently you'd stayed there? I had heard that the food hall (grEAT) had closed, but I'm hoping that information is incorrect.

Let me just clear up the confusion. The food hall in the BASEMENT of the Mall, which was called GrEAT, and which was a part of the Seibu department store, is closed. It has been replaced by the expanded grocery store which Pamo mentions in her/his post, and which has a sit down restaurant which is pretty good. You can take prepared foods away from their various counters like pastas and sushis. However, for people who have been to HOng Kong before mid 2005 or so, the very large take away areas that used to be in GrEAT are gone.
The food hall on the GROUND FLOOR (or what is the US is called the first floor)(i.e. street level of Queensway) of the mall is still there. This is fast food and is OK, mostly Chinese and some other Asian. It is not the same quality and variet as GfREAT used to be. The McDonalds that used to be there is closed.

Thanks for the clarifications, Pamo and Cicerone. Too bad about the take-away portion of the food hall, but I have always especially enjoyed the sushi and the egg custard tarts from the bakery -- sounds as though these might still be available. (And, if so, a terrific and cost-effective option for anyone staying at the Conrad, Shanri-la, or Marriott.)
