Help with Hyperdia
Hello to all fodorites. My family and I are traveling through Japan this June and I am trying to tie up a few ends and have run into trouble. I have not firmed up our travel from Hiroshima to Kurokawa then over and up to Kanazawa.
We are leaving Hiroshima the evening of the 29th (a Sunday) for Kurokawa. I am getting very mixed time tables from Hyperdia as to route and total time involved. I am assuming I am plugging in wrong information because the leg from Kurokawa to Takayama is even more confusing. Can anyone help??? We are supposed to be in Kanazawa the evening of the 1st of July. We have JR passes and I know we can't use the Nozomi, but it seems huge chunks of time will be spent on the trains. Is this right?? Do I need to change my itinerary?

re: Hiroshima to Kurokawa
what time are you leaving on the 29th? you can't leave after 17:00 because the JR local line to Kurokawa's last train is around 20:30. The next train is in the morning so you are getting a long wait in their system. bottom line is you would have to leave Hiroshima earlier
re: Kurokawa to Takayama
there are three different Kurokawas in JR system. You have to find which station is the one you need to go to. Kurokawa has three options, Kagawa,Kanagawa and Aichi. You need to find out which one of these stations is yours and select the correct one. From the info you have given I cannot figure out which one is the correct one.....sorry

I see now from your other posts you mean Kurokawa on Kyushu Island in the Kumamoto prefecture. If this is correct I think the JR Aso station is the one that serves the onsen in Kurokawa. Some one correct me if I am wrong.
If you are in Kyushu it will take a while to get to Takayama from there by train.

Thank you HT for your insight and comments. I read all about your trip and can't wait to go myself!!
I did try the Aso(kumamoto) station and that worked, however I am having trouble making sense of it all. It keeps giving me a route that includes the Nozomi train even though I don't select it. I'm thinking the route from Aso to Kanazawa is going to take somewhere around 10 hours??? If that's correct, I'm not sure we should travel that far into Kyushu or even at all. We were really looking for the small town feel of Kurokawa with the option to go "onsen hopping" so to speak. Maybe we should stay closer to Hiroshima and make our way to Kanazawa. Do you know of any other places in Western Honshu that fit the description of Kurokawa and the onsen experience?

It will take 11 hrs or so via train from Kumamoto to Kanazawa and 4 to 6 transfers....not a fun trip.
When you get to the "search condition page" on hyperdia click off the check next to "airline" and click the box that says "except nozomi" that way you won't get the airlines options or the nozomi options.
You can try Gero Onsen or some other ryokan in Gifu or maybe the Gunma prefecture.
Have you seen this site?
http://www.japaneseguesthouses.com/index.htm
It is a good site for non Japanese to use as they are very helpful and most of the ryokan are used to foreign visitors. There are ryokan and onsen villages similar to ones in Aso....although the terrain may be a little different.
Here is one that I have been checking out and you can get to Kanazawa from there in about 5 hours by train

You can also stay near Kyoto or Nagoya which would be less time to Kanazawa. Hope I am not confusing you.

Thanks HT. After looking at what you said and the time involved, we have decided not to go to Kyushu. It just takes too much time.
I looked into the Gero onsens and they look nice, but we decided to go with the Kinosaki area in the Hyogo Prefecture. We will do it as a day out of Kyoto instead. I t isn't exactly what we were looking for, but a good substitute (I hope).
Thanks for all of your help. I can't wait to get over there and start my vacation. I hope to post my trip report when we get back, although I'm sure I will have more questions between now and then.
