First of all, you picked a great city for a first time Asian trip. Singapore won't give you the overwhelming shock that some Asian cities may. My first time in Asia I stayed in Hong Kong initially and it broke me in quite well.
That being said, I agree with the others that you may not want to stay in S'pore the whole time. Not that you would have a bad time, just that there is a lot more within short cheap flights that you may enjoy more. Siem
Reap is phenomenal, as are the islands of Thailand and even the laid back resort town of Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia and even KL. Bangkok...the amazing city it is...may be a bit overwhelming for your first trip.
That being said, enjoy the Jurong Bird Park and the Night Safari in S'pore. I hope you and your father fall in love with Asia the way I have.
Happy Travels,
Steve

Thank you so much for all of your interesting posts. I have changed my flight details to include your recommendations. I am now arriving in Singapore Sept 1 to 6 then to Hong Kong Sept 6 to 11.I am now looking for unusual cultural experiences. I have lived abroad and enjoy really experiencing as much as I can about the people. Also I love children..is there any unusual small toy or gift that I may give that will be treasured as I may be connecting with a family in Hong Kong? Cheers and THANK YOU ALL,Kelly

Doing Singapore as your first Asian city is a very smart move.
But you're still spending 5/6 days there.
If possible I'd suggest taking a side trip to Bangkok as many of the other posters have suggested. Bangkok should satisfy your hunger for "cultural experiences" - the people are extremely friendly and Fodorites have a special connection with one specific guide who will show you a great time in Bangkok.
I'd take a day or two from Singapore on the one end and one or two days from hong Kong at the other end and put in Bangkok in the middle.
3 days Singapore, 3 days Bangkok, 3 days Hong Kong. Hong Kong is also a very small place and 3 days should be more than enough for a first time visit.
Sweethome: sorry, but no advertising on Fodors.
