Has anyone spent the night in the desert in India?
I'm wondering if anyone recommends spending the night in the desert in India--outside of Jaipur or Udaipur? Go out there on camels? Does this sound familiar? I have been told it is possible, but I can't seem to find anything on the web about it...

Camel trekking is more commonly from Jaiselmer, I believe, into the Thar Desert. I did this for four days several years ago, and enjoyed it immensely. The peace after the rest of India's continual clamour was wonderful, and the guides were taciturn Muslims who were capable of the most astonishing cooking over twig fires in the middle of nowhere. Food in India is often superb, but some of the best cooking I had was the bread cooked on hot stones and rice pudding made with fresh camel milk.

Yes..Camel Trekking and sleeping in the moonlit Thar DEsert is definately a wonderful expereince..It is very popular to organize a mini camel safari in jaisalmer, and another destination that is gaining popularity and not as far west is Bikaner...it is a alot of fun, and you can go on the simplest of treks, to a very elaborate Tented extravaganza. i would be happy to help anyone who has questions, as jaisalmer is one of my fave Places and i have been quite a few nights in the DEsert.

Just to add that sleeping in a Desert at night is one of those 'must do' experiences. Deserts in their nature are far from towns and hence you get to see stars like you have never seen in your life, it is simply amazing, together with the 'sound of silence'!
Don't miss it.

There is a "Camel Camp" in Osian, just outside of Jodhpur which has camel safaris in the desert too. The web page is www.camelcamposian.com, or something close to that. I've never been there, but I've booked an overnight trip for December. The pictures look fabulous.

as mentioned by others i suggest you not to go to jaisalmer as i had been there are there are no proper built accomodation facilities there and there are many tents next to each other and is very commercial and crowded.
i have been to khimsar too. khimsar is a excellent place to do this. they have proper built mud huts in the deserts and is besides a lake with hamocks to relax in and they serve meals by the lake side. it is a wonderful experiance and they also have a fort hotel which is just 20 minutes away.
khimsar also has a camel and horse and jeep rides in the thar desert and i think they take you to some wildlife sancutary also.
however the camel ride is the best.
one more benifit of going to khimsar is that u dont have to travel much. like for jaisalmer u travel 6 hrs by road from jodhpur.
khimsar is only 1 1/2 hour from jodhpur.
i think u should go to khimsar if u are spending the night in the desert.
if u want more infromation on how i got there, hotel booking etc. then just leave a mail to me on my email address above.
