great wall of china

We will like to go visit Mutianyu. What is the best way to go there other than with a tour (not interested) and driver (heard it is too expensive)? I saw in a website to take Bus #6 from Xuanwumen Gate, bus route 916....any suggestions if this is a good choice and secondly, how long does this take and third, is there a schedule available anywhere we could look at. thanks.

Angela, in case you don't get an answer here, there's a forum called the Oriental List which specialises in China travel. I'm sure someone there could help you.

thank you for the advice. regarding the local bus, do you know where I can get a schedule of bus 916. Do you know where dongzhimen is in relation to the center of Beijing. how easy is it to rent a car at HuaiRou. how long is the bus ride and is it pretty easy to go back the same way.

An English speaking driver with a new Audi A6 took us to Mutianyu, the Ming temples and the Sacred Way for $125. That was money well spent!

By way of comparison we paid Y160 (US$20) each for a local tour to Badaling and the Ming Tombs, lunch included.
