Great places in KL

My friends and i are planning to go to Genting and kl for a holiday in 14th feb, but we are not very familiar with Malaysia. Any suggestion of nice and fun places to go?

Depends what you're after.

Genting is extremely tacky... maybe fun for a day, more if you like casinos or golf. It's popular with the Chinese in Malaysia (the Malays are Muslim so they aren't permitted to gamble). It will be absolutely NUTS that week, btw, as a lot of people take the week off for Chinese New Year. Make reservations now if you haven't already. Personally I would just give it a miss, but it's not really the kind of place that interests me.

KL... most people who live there SHOP as a major passtime. Try Suria KLCC or MidValley Megamall for that. Batu Caves are worth seeing. There's a water park out in PJ called Sunway Lagoon. Doesn't really look spectacular, but good to get a respite from the heat, I suppose. Go up KL Tower. Visit some clubs on Jalan P Ramlee, or pubs in Bangsar. Chinatown Nightmarket is kind of fun - you can buy fake Rolexes and stuff. Don't pay more than 30% of the asking price though!

But that's only about three or four days worth of stuff! How long are you coming for? I would also spend at least a day in Melaka (of course I would - I live here!), and you can do that on a day trip from KL, though I would recommend at least staying a night. Melaka has a cool historical downtown... I just adore it.

Penang is also good, though I didn't love it as much as some people do. Langkawi is the place to get away from it all and get some sun and sand - duty free zone, too, so the beer is cheap. East coast is beautiful, and has great snorkelling, but it will be wet in Feb.

Can't help much more than that. Depends what your interests are and what you consider "fun". Feel free to check out my web-site - has some pictures of different places in Malaysia and my thoughts on each one. <members.tripod.com/expatsinmalaysia/>

Give Genting a miss especially during the week you planned to travel. It's Chinese New Year. Genting will be packed with crowds from Singapore and the locals. If you are planning to go to the casinos, it's not the right time.
I don't think you can even get close to the gambling tables or machines. It's that crowded.

How about Club Med in Cherating?

PLease, whatever you do, do not go to Genting. It is dirty, tacky and there's nothing to see but a lousy casino. Go to Frasers Hill or Cameron HIghland's instead. Even Taman Negara is better than Genting.

I lived in malaysia for 3 months on business and I stayed in the Pacific Regency. It is a hotel/apartment building next to the KL tower. It has a beautiful rooftop swimming pool, breakfast is included and it has a gym as well. The price is reasonable.

If you love silk, you should visit little india while in KL.

Also, if you can find a driver or taxi, make arrangements to go to a night bazaar. They list the locations in the papers, or ask the driver which one is hot that night. The Night bazaars are awesome. You can buy anything there and the food is out of this world.

Petaling street market, Chinatown.
Go in the evening and dine on the streets and shop!
