Good websites for Thailand
I'm going to Thailand in Dec. and planning to explore Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Pattaya, Ayuttaya, Phuket and Krabi. I'm trying to find information on each city and the best way to get there and around. I went to Tourism Authority of Thailand website, but still missing some info. Can anybody recommend me some good websites? Also, is it a good idea to join a 1-day tour to Ayuttaya and maybe 3-4 days tour to Chiang Mai & Chiang Rai. Thanks.

Dana -

I spent the first two weeks of October in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and Phuket. The amount of time you spend in Chiang Mai depends on how you want to spend your time. We arrived in Chiang Mai on a Monday morning and left on a Wednesday afternoon and that was enough time to go to the night markets, walk throughout the old city and visit the Wats, go outside the city to an elephant farm, elephant ride, orchid farm, the Regent for lunch, the markets, and so forth....our hotel arranged our tour outside the city which was a huge plus. How you get around again also depends on what you plan on doing. The airport in Chiang Mai is easy to navigate. We got a taxi to take us to our hotel and from their we just got taxis/tuk-tuks to go to whatever location we felt was too far to walk. Hope this helps.

Have a good trip!

Dana -

Actually my friend living in Bangkok booked my travel for me. However, you can make your travel arrangements online through United, Yahoo, or Travelocity and it is a very easy process...just use an e-ticket.

As for hotels. We stayed at the Riverview Lodge. It was fairly inexpensive and a very basic hotel with amenities (airconditioning and so forth and was clean). It was close to the night market, and they arranged our tour for us one of the days we were there..They were also good about calling taxis. We were able to walk to the Wats (albeit a far walk) and walk to the nightmarket with ease. The one negative about staying at the Riverview was that it is off the beaten path...and you have to go down a dark alley at night to return to the hotel. Our cab driver from the airport was able to find the hotel, but one day our taxi in town had a difficult time...I would also not recommend walking down the path by yourself at night...we took taxis back to the hotel at night (very inexpensive) we did feel very safe at the hotel however. and it was inexpensive. The other hotel we were thinking about staying at was the Imperial. It is more in the center of town and when we drove by, it appeared to be nice...it might be more expensive though.

Hope this helps!
