For glorialf:
I saw your message to us the other day, but I did not have a chance to respond. It has been crazy since we returned last Sunday. Our trip was excellent, I am glad we went to Singapore as well as Thailand and Malaysia. Each country has a different flavor. I haven't yet had a chance to sit down and write a trip report. Hopefully this week will settle down.
We used Tan as our guide, other Fodorites have used her. She is very knowledgeable and well spoken. I am definitely recommending her to others. For the beggining of the rainy season, it only rained 5 times, mostly at night, which was great. We could not have asked for more perfect weather.
Oh by the way. We definitely prefer the Oriental over the Penn.
Many thanks to you and other Fodorites for all your suggestions and help.
Dana

Dana-- glad you had a good trip and looking forward to hearing more about it.
Bob-- I believe this was Dana's first time in bangkok and she was debating which of the two hotels to stay at and thus provoked one of the usual threads debating the Oriental vs the Penn. It sounds as though she decided to stay at both. As you know, I definitely prefer the Oriental and do have issues with the Penn but she went with no bias one way or the other so it will be interesting to hear her perspective.

Dana-- I'm sure your report of your experience at the Penn and Oriental will prompt another long thread -- something all fodorites seem to love to debate. I'm glad you tried the Oriental and felt the same way about it that I do -- looking forward to hearing more.

i'm also going back to BKK soon...have been a fan of the Pen, but want to try the Oriental too. Problem is, the rates are always so much higher there. Even at asiahotels, etc. Anyone have a good tip for lower Oriental prices?

The best rates for the Oriental are generally on their website or by calling the hotel direct. They are almost always cheaper than the discount hotel websites. However, their rates are always higher than the Penn but, in my opinion, well worth it.
