Walter W. - You pretty much listed most of my favourites in the places I've been to, except I may have to add The Datai to the list in Langkawi.

I'm fairly suprised that Malaysia isn't mentioned more often on this forum as I personally prefer the islands of Malaysia to those of Thailand, which I found too built up IMHO. DEpends what you want from a holiday I guess as some people find Malaysian islands too quiet. Food is excellent too, although Bangkok is a more exciting city compared to KL.

Well, Bob, the prices have gone up. Check your favorite web sites. The difference between high season & low season in resort areas like Phuket is even more noticeable.

Yes, there are huge difference between high and low season in Phuket, mostly because you really don't want to be there during the monsoons! But even in other locations there is at least some difference between high and low season.

i didn't say there was NO difference i only told about my experiences over 10 years...phuket is an exception as are many of the over-populated/rated sea side places, imo...
i can't see spending $400+ for a thai seaside hotel room...i'm just cheap...

Bob, Hotel rates change over 10 years... The rates you gave for the Bangkok hotels were lower than what people will find if they are planning now. Peninsula, for example is about $220 for high season (Nov to Mar) on the r24 web site that you recommend, which has some of the best prices around. Also, although prices at beach resorts go way up in high season, $400+ is only at the highest end (Amanapuri etc). Several luxury hotels are in the $200 range in high season in Phuket. Many other less luxe places are under $200. You may not like beach resorts because you have them nearby in Cape Cod, but as you see from so many posters (lots on honeymoons) that is what they are looking for.

We loved Four Seasons in Chiang Mai. It is very unusual resort and does not have a feeling of hotel. One of the hotels if you spend money on this, I recommend to really spend time there to rest. As opposed to other hotels as just spend some time to sleep and be convenient to sights.

Hobbes- To answer your question about the Prada in Ubud...I was there, in Dec 1998, less than, I think, a year after it opened and it was great and the price was just right...$50. including tax and breakfast. I ended up there totally by accident. I was staying across the street at the Siti Bungalows...Hans Snel's place, but totally didn't like it and had planned to stay there nearly two weeks...that's why I don't prepay hotel rooms! Anyhow, I had lizards, not little geckos, running all around my room to say the least of the problems...plus Hans had just passed away months earlier which I wasn't aware of. So, I found out about the Prada across the street and moved there and loved it. I was the only guest part of the time and everyone was wonderful to me. It's too bad you found it run down. Thanks for posting that information for us all.Happy Travels!

as recently as last week i have seen rates similar to the ones i have quoted.... i don't want to get into a dispute about this...for one, peninsula continues to advertise $190 and it is $173 inclusive on the discount site...this is not a suite just their standard room...my rates are not ten years old as i have only been going to thailand for about 9 years the most recent time in may/june (low season), but all other trips were in high season...

As much as I respect rhkkmk'S advice I must disagree with the statement that hotel rates do not vary much from low season to high. Take the Peninsula. The best rate I found for a deluxe room (standard) up until Oct 31 was $178 which included taxes/service charges/
breakfast. After that date it went up to $227 until Mar 31 2005 and then droped to $195. This pricing structure is quite common to a lot of 4 and 5 star hotels throughout Thailand and most noticable at beach properties.
