There are only 4 daily flights between HKG and SGN. 2 on Cathay Pacific and one each on Vietnam and United. CX and VN codeshare on each other's flight.
With so little competition, there's no really cheap fare. Check with UA, and check with a Hong Kong-based travel agent.

Poster above was asking about trips from HK, to Ho Chi Minh City ( SGN ) you have only Cathay Pacific, Vietnam Airlines and United. With so few it might not be easy to find much cheap. Unless you took a 'very' round-and-about routing.

rkkwan, you and I were posting at the same time.
The poster who was aksing about low cost carriers out of HK was looking for somewhere interesting for a break from HK to visit somewhere else for a few days over the new year, I was hoping you would come along as I am sure you can give them better ideas than I could if there is somewhere near HK they could visit as a China destination!
I think it is just one or 2 posts from here.

Actually, sweetie darling, I am intrigued by the poster who is going from Hong Kong to Chiang Mai. That sounds like a better option. (I have been to Bangkok, but not Chiang Mai.)
We are planning our summer holiday right now. We were supposed to travel to Singapore and Borneo, but that plan was nixed by my traveling companions.
Any suggestions?

That's a pity, Borneo and Sarawak are still places on my list!
Hong Kong express only flies a few times per week from Hong Kong to Chiang Mai and the flight is about 2 hrs 50 minutes, I don't know what the fares would be like though but maybe they have some promotion, but I am sure that route will get more popular!
You are lucky in a way that although July will be busy for long haul flights it is a relatively cheap time to stay in Chiang Mai, if you search through the threads you will see that Chiang Mai really has some great places to stay now.
You may care to note that if you still decide on Vietnam and can find a reasonable fare to Hanoi then from there you can use Air Aisa ( budget carrier ) to Bangkok and then up to Chiang Mai ( you can't do tight connections with the budget carriers but that's anothe story ).
If yuo are flying 'long-haul' it is well worth trying to incorporate as many of your flight sectors into the same routing. We don't know where you are flying from but as an example, 'if' you were flying from the USA you could use United to HK and Ho Chi Minh City ( Saigon ) with a stopover in HK, or use Cathay Pacific the same way.
If you were flying from East Coast (or Europe ) you could use Thai via BKK to Hong Kong with stopover in BKK so as to go to Chiang Mai and then add Ho Chi Minh City as a seperate ticket using perhaps a deal with Air France ( they do reasonable deals BKK-both Hanoi and HCMC ).
That's enough food for thought!
