Steve - that's www.airasia.com you've heard of. Half the price of Thai Air or Phuket air. But usually only one or 2 flights a day - not always at convenient times. From BKK to ChaingMai, for instance, you either leave at 6:30a or 9:30p. You can't book through a travel agent, must do it online. Haven't flown them, haven't heard anything about them. Except they don't have interline agreements with other airlines, so if their flight is cancelled, you're waiting 12+ hours for their next flight. I think the only cities they operate in Thailand are BKK, ChaingMai, ChaingRai and Phuket. Maybe someone out there can give us some first hand experience on this low cost carrier. -carol

Thai Airways I believe still do a pass, which airline you choose can depend on where you are going. Just as a quick summary these are the airlines:-
Bangkok Airways, BKK to Koh Samui(only operatros) BKK-Sukhothai-Chiang Mai, BKK-Phuket, BKK-Krabi, Phuket to Samui and Phuket to pattaya(Utapao), Samui to Pattaya, Samui to Singapore. They also have flights into Chian and soon also BKK-Maldives.
Thai Airways: Covers most destinations with exception of Koh Samui
Thai Air Asia: BKK to Chiang Mai, Udon Thani, Hat Yai, Phuket plus some other domestic locations
Orient Thai's One-2-Go: BKK-Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, BKK-Phuket
Nok Air: BKK to Chiang Mai, Udon Thani, Hat Yai and soon to start Phuket
PB Air and Air Andaman also operators, flights seem to change, not major operators.
If you want Budget Thai Air Asia, Nok Air and One-2-Go, Thai Air Asia and Nok Air both good ( very strict on 15ks baggage allowance, every kg over you pay ). My staff fly around quite a bit and we have used Thai Air Asia and Nok Air and purely personal preference they seem to like Nok Air ( owned by Thai Airways ).
Aircraft: BKK Air use ATR 42/72 and Boeing 717's.
Nok Air and Thai Air Asia use 737's
Orient Thai's One-2-Go mix of 757 and 747's(yes, even on doemstic)
Thai use mix of 747's, 777s, A-330s, A-300's and a few 737s.
Although the budget airlines have very very cheap offers it depends on how fixed your itinery is, the great thing about Thai is that they are very flexible.
