Thanks for the heads up about the food cost. We are not great fans of Indian food, but we really only have tried the curry. Glad to know that we will find other options.
DH is ordering rupees tomorrow. We will be there in less than four weeks!

On April 16 you have shopping in Jaipur. this was my favorite place for beautiful , NOT expensive, block print clothes :
http://www.somashop.com/
NOT the one in New Delhi (it might be ok, but i dont know it) but the one in Jaipur was fantastic! I was there just over a yr ago and it was then in a beautful shop in a quiet area. They wre gong to move soon after, so DO chgeck the address. Everything i borught home from there for me or gift as been loved by all.

Hi,
Here is some advice on Jaipur part of your tour.
1) While coming back from Amber fort, you can stop for pohots of Hawa Mahal. THat is what everyone does. as it is on the way and there is not much to see inside the monument.
2) City palace and Jantar mantar are across the street to each other. So when you are visiting one on Tuesday, 16th April, you might as well do Jantar mantar on the same day. As it does not take long and you do not waste time to get to Jantar mantar again by crossing the busy roads of Jaipur city.
3) Rambagh palace is very good idea. Before Dinner at Rambagh palace, you can stop at "Steam" a pub at Rambagh palace itself. Within the same premises, you can sit inside an original steam engine / train and have drinks and snacks served to you, then you can walk through the premises and reach to one of the resturants in Rambagh Palace.
4) If your taste is basil n thyme, Imperial, Rambagh palace, then Niros will be a big let down for you. Niros is a very average place and not for people who have great taste in food and places. I suggest that you can go to Jai Mahal Palace for lunch. Or Mandawa Haveli... it will be a good experience.
5) I suggest that on April 17th, you do some volunteer work, as you would have taken photos of Hawa Mahal on 16th and would have also visited Jantar Mantar, on 16th along with City Palace. Doing volunteer work or visiting an Indian family / house can be a different experience and will remain as a memory with you forever. This will be a big cultural activity you can do.
Do let me know, if you need suggestion for volunteer work or Indian Family visit in Jaipur.
Enjoy your time.
Lucy

CaliNurse, Thanks for the shopping information. It is in my notes now. I am really looking forward the shopping along with everything else, including trying Indian food.
Lucy, Thank you for your very thoughtful observations on my plans for Jaipur. I have added them to my notes. It is so hard to have a feel for what can be done on any given day when you have never been to the place.
Everyone, Thanks again for all the great ideas and suggestions!
I ordered new carry ons today as the ones we have been traveling with had some issues on the last trip. The new ones should be here later this week and I can start the packing...repacking process to get everything into the 2 carry ons and a 20" piece. My problem is that it will be warm to hot in India and cool and probably damp in northern Europe.
