What are few of your favorite restaurants of any kind in Tokyo?

Interested to hear about it,

Thank you

Hi again, August!

My favorite restaurants in Tokyo were in Japan, not in Kazakstan or Taiwan, but YMMV. ;-)

While in Tokyo itself, one of my favorite restaurants was just a little place with a bar and a few tables not far from the western entrance to Ueno Park -- utterly awesome pork! I can probably find a bit more information if you want, my dear....

sorry -- I was disconnected prematurely.

While in Tokyo itself, one of my favorite restaurants was just a little place with a bar and a few tables not far from the western entrance to Ueno Park -- utterly awesome pork! I can probably find a bit more information if you want, my dear... but to be clear, it really isn't a place that would likely appeal to MDs inclined to overspending for their hotels. JMO.

I'm new to this thread, so obviously I'm missing something. The OP asked for restaurant recommendations in Tokyo.

@KJA, what does this mean? " but to be clear, it really isn't a place that would likely appeal to MDs inclined to overspending for their hotels. JMO. "

Perhaps I'm missing a past joke. In fact, I'm sure I must be. Please fill me in if you can before I offer the OP what he asked for.

Thanks @KJA

@ Lolazahra: Yes, history. Here’s the most relevant thread:
http://www.fodors.com/community/asia...m#last-comment

(BTW, my reference to overspending wasn’t because of the room rate, an issue to which you seem particularly sensitive – it’s because the OP said that she, a solo traveler, was considering what she herself called an “overpriced” quad in a hotel that didn’t even seem to meet her stated criteria very well, when a quick check showed that she had options for doubles at similar hotels that seemed to meet her criteria a bit better.)

And please don’t refrain from offering whatever response you feel appropriate! As you can see, I followed through with information on my favorite restaurant in Tokyo and can’t imagine why you or anyone else would not do so if you want.

What kind of places are you looking for?

If you enjoy sushi, I find the chain Sushi Zanmai very decent. It's well priced, very fresh.

Note, I'm not suggesting it's the best sushi in Tokyo, but that it's an excellent option for delicious relaxed sushi.

For tonkatsu, the famous place is Maiden, which is certainly very good. I prefer Katsukura, a small Kyoto chain now also in Tokyo. The one that's lauded as very best is Butagumi which I've intended to visit on each of three trips and failed!

If you're talking about the top top restaurants, the ones that run several hundred dollars per person, chowhound is your best source as many there are regulars at these and can recommend their favourites.

Thank you very much Kaveh! Looks like there are too many good places to eat in these cities.

Do any of the ones that you suggested need advance reservations?

No, though you may queue a little at busy times. These are mid-range, I didn't do any of the posh big name places.

Butagumi I'm not sure, as haven't been. There's the original plus a smaller second branch now.

Sounds good. I read that Tokyo/Kyoto is also good for international food. I am a fan of Indian food as well. Has anyone tried Dhaba India? Thank you

This old thread has a lot of Japan food content, though not many specific restaurant recommendations, but may still be useful. http://www.fodors.com/community/asia...s-anywhere.cfm
