What's fun is that this announcement caught everybody by surprise. They had been zero rumor of it on flyertalk on this route, and nothing was hinted at the big flyertalk meet in Houston with CO's CEO and other top brass.
On the other hand, Moscow and Lagos had been mentioned for months and still no flight.
The big question now is if CO will get additional 777s, plus where and how. With new ultra-longhauls to PEK, DEL, and the continued expansion of other international route, 18 777s is not enough.

With all these new non-stops it will effect many European airlines that have been used to picking up all the North America to India sub-continent and S.E.Asia transit traffic, first SQ, now the new Thai non-stop, Emirates feeding thu Dubai, CO, Jet Airways plus Air India adding more USA flights. You know already just how many passengers are used to transiting Europe heading East, no small number! I know that Qatar and Etihad would dearly love to get NYC non stops but the aircraft just aren't around.
Trends changing from Africa too with more business people and travellers heading East, KQ not just BKK and HKG but adding Shanghai, the Boss of KQ said that people were simply going to Europe on business thru nothing more than 'habit' and then discovered the goods they could buy in Bangkok, Guangzhou or Shanghai and the prices!! There has always been big 'merchant' traffic, people literally fly to these places with a bundle of cash, go to wholesalers and markets, buy the goods, freight them back and sell them in the local markets, and make a small furtune. Good old fashioned trading.

I think the Jet Airways flights will be interesting because Jet has an excellent domestic network/reputation and quite a good 'Pass' deal within India. I am sure they will be doing a lot of promotion so people can do the whole trip with one carrier.
