Clearing Customs in Narita

How long can we expect to clear customs in Narita upon arrival? 30 minutes? 1 hour? Your guidance will be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Customs, probably 10 seconds, but if you get stopped it will take as long as it takes them to search your bags.

Immigration, depends on how long the lines are. I would plan on 1 hour to 1 1/2 hours to go through immigration, collect your luggage, clear customs, and exit the secure area. If you are lucky it will be quicker.

I just cleared customs in Narita 5 days ago and I bet it didn't take 30 minutes (and I was dawdling!). But I wouldn't count on that. It was a mid-morning arrival, I had a connection to make with hours to kill and I had carry on luggage only. I wouldn't be comfortable without budgeting 1 to 1 and 1/2 hours for the tasks.

Narita is very efficient, however.

Thanks, all. My 16-year old was in Japan last month, part of a student delegation as an ambassador and he told me it took about 30 minutes. I found that hard to believe since I've been through it before (but to Europe) and it's taken me about 1-1.5 hours. Thanks again and for your guidance!

It just depends on how busy the airport is when your plane lands. There are two 'peak' periods on weekdays - around 7-9 am when many European and some Asian flights arrive, and mid to late afternoon when most North American flights touch down. When arriving at immigration you find there is next to no line, you are in luck as you'll be through in minutes and baggage reclaim and customs shouldn't add to much. But if the immigration line (for non-Japanese) stretches to the back of the room, be ready to wait at least an hour, but at least by the time you emerge your luggage will already be out and you just hand in your customs declaration form and answer a few questions.
The shortest time from disembarking to leaving Narita for me has been around 30 minutes, the longest around 1.5 hours.

In the late '90s we took a vacation that involved us first going to the Philippines to the beach, then Japan. Once we made it through the line, customs went through everything, and I mean everything. They didn't strip search us but they did make us take off shoes and socks. The nice Japanese lady kept asking me, "Where are the illegal drugs? Are you sure you do not have any illegal drugs"?

It was a pretty surreal experience, but they were very polite the entire time.

We arrived early this week & got in with about 3 other plane at about 5 PM. Immigration may take as long as an hour specially for the Foreign Passport holders. As has been customary for our family of 5, arrived with the max load of 10 50# bags. The customs officer just looks at our papers & asks what we did. We say "SHOP" then lets us go.

Chazas- funny you would say what you did but the only time I was ever checked on my way out was my trip to the Phil early this year. This was the first time they ever when through my check in luggage- not really thoroughly, but still. It must be the Phil somehow.........
