Shark's fin? Are you that unsophisticated? Shame on you for your gross ignorance.

I will probably get crucified for posting this but here goes!

Expect to pay around 500 Baht for the cheapest sharksfin and don't expect anything more than dogfish(very small coastal sharks). The most popular sharksfin restaurant that is frequented by the top businessmen and foodies from Hong Kong is call "Kiak"(not sure of the spelling) situated on Surawongse road. Very unique thick brown soup and the average price for a bowl is 1,500 Baht. You can find sharksfin in Siam Square but IMO "Kiak" is much better.

Bird's nest are not so popular in Thailand and are mostly exported. There are quite a lot of restaurants that serve bird's nest but non really stand out as being better than the other.

Frankly, I agree with Mango's POV, if not his directness.

If you insist, the Chinese restaurant at the Novotel will have both items. Every Chinese restaurant in Bangkok will have them. I've lived here for 17 years and been served 100's if not 1,000's of bowls of sharksfin soup, and I have absolutely no clue what the big deal is. They all have the same taste, which I can easily reproduce by chewing my own fingernails. Why should I pay hundreds, if not thousands, of Baht for that?

Many people are unaware of the cruelty and unsustainability of the shark fin trade. Increasingly on the high seas sharks are “finned” and the rest of their bodies, often still alive, are dumped at sea. Shark meat is often too low-value compared to the target species (e.g. tuna) so 95-99% of the shark is discarded to conserve hold space. Shark fin provides gelatinous bulk in shark fin soup, but it has no taste – the soup has to be flavoured with chicken or other stock. While a fisherman in India will earn only $6 per pound of shark fin, a bowl of soup can cost $100 in a Hong Kong restaurant.

Please don't support it...........
