Chiang Mai Restaurants

I've culled through some old posts and pulled out the list below that look interesting.

Looking for good service, attractive setting (maybe with a tropical garden feel with a possible water feature or an old historic house), and not too loud.

Love Asian food, but might want a break and eat Italian. Would be mostly for dinner, and maybe a lunch or two when we are not on a daytrip.

Appreciate rants, raves and good to know info. Which ones should we arrive early at to avoid crowds?

The Riverside

Good View

Whole Earth

The Gallery

Huen Phen

Mahanaga

Modiwa

House

Baan Chom Doi

Grand Lanna

The Boat

Piccollo Roma

Dalaaba

Riverside - VERY loud. Adeqaute food. Would not return for dinner.
Good View - same as above
Whole Earth - lovely garden setting. Good vegetarian food.
Gallery -- used to love it but had two lousy meals recently. Great setting on river
Mahanaga -- gorgeous setting and very good food. Very quiet
Modiwa -- very good and pleasant
Baan Chom Doi- terrific seafood. Non touristy. Outdoors.
Grand Lanna -- very good food and nice setting. Out of the way. Quiet. Can sit indoors or outdoors. Expensive for Chiang Mai
Boat - fine for lunch, fun and lively,
Piccolo Roma -- pleasant Italian right in the night market. Very friendly service.

Dalaabaa is in a house. Not old or historic house, but charming with pond and garden atmosphere. The Thai food was good here. Very comfortable seating. The only drawback I had with this place was that there was only one bathroom and it was a "his and/or hers" variety...

Pardon me if this posts twice. My computer is acting up.

La Gondola... very good Italian. Nice and peaceful. It is located along the river. Wine selection was not too bad.

Good View... waaaayyy too loud for me. Long hard wooden tables, lots of loud chatter, live music, food "OK" but nothing I need to do again!

You might think about Tha Nam, an old house on the river. Really good food (Northern Thai).

Also, the restaurant at the Chedi (on the river across from Piccola Roma) is in an old house that used to be the British Counsel. Chefs are Thai, Swiss and Indian.

Food at Piccola Roma is always good, but the Italian owner throws some kind of tantrum just about every time I've eaten there. I refer to it as the 'free floor show.'

Whole Earth - Very good food (non-vegetarian as well as vegetarian), nice outdoor setting. Indian food as well as Thai. Reasonably priced.

The House - East-West Fusion. Nice setting in -- you guessed it - a house. Relatively expensive.

Mahanaga - Beautiful setting, a bit out of the way. Poor lighting -- they had to bring us flashlights to read the menu. Food was the worst we have had in Thailand -- and expensive too. Do not waste your time in Chiang Mai here.

Grand Lanna - Stunning setting indoors & out. The Thai food was very good, but not quite as special as we remembered it from our visit last year.

Okay, so is it too much to expect a good setting AND good food AND good service, AND not too expensive (for CM)WITHOUT too much noise and NOT to far from town?

Name three or four and I'm there!

Huen Phen and The Whole Earth are two that certainly fit your requirements. Both are charming homes as well. I don't know if they are historic.

In April we ate at Whole Earth-good, House-good, The Riverside-good, Huen Phen-very good, Gallery-terrible, Good View- adiquate. Overall my good ratings would be average compared to the 5 dinners in Bangkok such as China House, Condoms, Pen, etc.

I almost forgot about Hong Taew (means 'shophouse' in Thai), located in - guess what? - a shophouse on Nimanhemen Road, very near the Amari hotel. Nicely decorated with antiques inside, great food, and good price but it has been a while since I last ate there.

Dalaba was ok, not special, IMO. But others have had better things to say about it.

Whole Earth wasn't impressive. Of course, we'd just been eating fabulous Indian Food in Penang befor going to CM, so I'm sure that is part of what made us feel the food there was bland and mediocre.

Best place we ate was Ramchatcha.

Our lunches at Yaang Come Village were excellent.
