Changi Airport

We will be flying into Changi Aiport enroute to Australia - unfortunately we have a 7 hour stopover in Singapore. Nowadays are travellers allowed out of the airport - I seem to recall a tourist tour of the city during the day but don't know if it is still running?

Last time I went through, we were definitely allowed out and with the metro now extended to the airport it is very easy to get into the city and back.

As far as I know, the bus tours are still operating and are free to Singapore Airline passengers.

No problem leaving the airport but if you are taking the tour just go to the Singapore Tour desk in the transit area first because they handle Immigration out and back in for you.

There's a city tour and a Sentosa Island tour. Our flight arrived at 7pm, too late for either, but we had no trouble getting into the city by train - helpful people showed us how to buy tickets from a machine, with a refundable card - and we spent a couple of pleasant evening hours on the waterfront near the Merlion, marvelling at the new building -arts centre, on concert hall? The train station exit is in a shopping centre.

Singapore makes it fairly painless for people with long layovers both at the airport and if they choose to see a bit of the city. I believe they still have lockers (most airports did away with them after 9/11), but please double check this point.

If your layover is after 6:00 p.m. I'd suggest you go to the Night Safari (zoo). It's near the airport and I think one of the most unique and enjoyable experiences in Singapore.

I'd also suggest a visit to Raffles hotel, either for a meal or for a drink at the Long Bar.

Many thanks for your info on Singapore - we are quite conversant with all the sights as this is about our 10th visit, however we are pleased to hear that we will at least be able to leave the airport and have dinner, probably at the Boat Quay.
