There are rental cars available, but the easiest thing we've found to do is to rent a driver for a day. They take you where you want to go, and then wait for you at each place. You don't have to keep an eye out for taxis all the time!

Consider renting a car for the week. There are several car rental shops directly outside Phuket airport, you can rent a Suzuki for the same rates you'll pay at the beaches. That way you won't be at the mercy of the taxi drivers all day long, or paying high rates for a driver. You'll need an IDL.

both avis and budget have places at the airport...the marriott is very remote and taxis, while cheap, will cost you plenty to go way out there....i rented a honda cvx which was fantastic...they delivered it to the marriott for me...and came for it...

Budget and Avis are quite good rate wise when compared with smaller operators, as Bob said a Honda/Corolla type is quite adequote, Airport Car rent and davids Car rent are also at the airport which is close to Marriott but the rates of Budget and Avis are not that much more, plus you can pick up those airlimes plus you can almost certainly get a discount with some airline cards you have, so it all adds into the deal. Make sure as Texas said you have that International with you, the rentals won't ask for it but it is the 'law' and can be a hassle you don't want to know about if you had any problems.
