Capital One credit card for travel

I'm planning to use my Capital One card for my trip since there is not the extra 2% charge for conversion rate.

I just called Capital One to let them know I will be out of the country. I was told a notification is for 28-days maximum. If I'm gone more than 28-days, I need to call them. I guess I can use their collect call number, but it seems they would allow more time.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I don't have a Capital One card but I've never heard of such a limitation. I don't even bother telling my card company when I go away, they're used to my strange spending habits (although they once called me when I charged a greyhound bus ticket from NY to Albany--didn't fit my spending habits!) I would think that if you told them you were going to be gone longer, they shouldn't make you bother with a phone call.

Very odd - I've never had any credit card say that 28 days was the maximum. Do take along their international collect number and call them.

i've never heard of that and i have a capital one card and they have never told me that---28 days....i would ignor it....just make sure you take the phone number to call them from overseas if you have to---it will be on your record so they will see it....they are not a regular bank so they operate differently than some others...

i think even if they have not imposed the 2 or 3% charge they are still subject to the visa or m/c international card charge of 1%....

one card that charges nothing is the brooks brothers mastercard...i use it now for all my overseas purchases if i can...

I called Capital One in December because we were going to be out of the country and nothing was said about 28-days. The guy would not allow me to talk with a supervisor. He kept saying I needed to call when the 28-days are up. I've never had this experiences before with Capital One.

The mbna World Perks Visa card offerred me a free card and no charge for international transactions when I obtained it in Sept. 05. This may have been a special promotion but I checked to see if my account still provides that benefit and fortunately they said yes. We will be spending $5-6,000 in Thailand and Malaysia plus about an equal amount prior to departure for hotels so a 2% savings will pay for a few dinners.

Called Capital One again. Talked with a lady that spoke fluent English. She told me Capital One has always had the 28-day limit, and I could call collect to get an extension. Also, the 28-days starts with the day you call them. I wanted to have the date start on February 3, and they will not start the 28-days at a future time. She said her son lives overseas and has to call every 28-days to get extensions. A good deal for her as she gets to talk to her son and Capital One pays for it!

Since we leave today, I will need to live with the situation with Capital One. I do have credit union cards and they do not care how long I'm out of the country. So I'll use those cards at the end of our trip.
