I've spent quite a lot time in Thailand over the years, more in Chiang Mai than anywhere else. I think I'd like to find a new hangout place and wonder if Chiang Rai might fill the bill, smaller but big enough. I'm interested to hear from people who like Chiang Rai and have spent weeks at a time there. I look forward to hearing what you like about it.

No Chiang Rai lovers out there? I wonder if it's a good sign or a bad sign.

I don't know if this is your cup of tea, but there are a number of devotees over on the TripAdvisor Chiang Rai forum who might give you a better idea of what it's like to spend long periods of time there. When I planned my trip last year, I found that it was a helpful board,with several ex-pats (not sure their origins) who live in Chiang Rai.

We spent a week in CR earlier this year as part of a longer stay in Northern Thailand. Although smaller than CM and lacking the numbers of restaurants etc. I much preferred it ( and have spent quite shot of time in CM over the years). Great location for getting around the far north and easy access by air. We stayed at a great new guesthouse there which had kitchen facilities. If you are inserted I will ask my wife for the name.

Crellston, numbers of restaurants aren't what I need, I usually end up going to 1 or 2 all the time. CM has gotten too big-feeling for me so I'm glad to hear you like CR. I went through once on a bus, on my way to Chiang Khong from CM, but didn't stop and I think it's time to go back. Yes, I'm inserted, please ask her for me.

I also see a number of places listed on Airbnb.

If I may also suggest the Thai Visa forum, which has a sub forum on CR. Many expats post there.

We loved CR for our few days there, it was definitely a place I would consider spending more time in. The night market for food, the surrounding country side, small walkable city, plenty to like.

Mme, We spend several hours in CR on our way to the Golden Triangle. Very cool place. Loved it and would go back.

Just got back a few days ago from Spain and am now BTW (back to work). Finding time to write while I'm still awake after work is a challenge, but I promise a trip report -- or at least something started -- soon!

MmePurdu, here is the link to Na Rak O http://www.booking.com/hotel/th/na-r...ort.en-gb.html there is another similar place relight next door called Grandma Keow which also gets rave reviews and looked nice. Both are a quick walk from the centre of town but very quiet.

The Sunday walking market was much better than the one in CM and the food there was superb!
