@jacketwatch<<<Except maybe a nasty bug.>>>

A nasty bug can easily be picked up by not washing your hands.

5* hotel buffet breakfast and lunches aren't immune to poor food hygiene, be it in the kitchen, or diners who haven't got a clue about the dangers as they pass along the servery.

Picking at food and putting it back, eating as they progress along the queue, picking up food with one ladle and then picking up other food with the same ladle, and then putting the ladle back into yet another food. Squeezing bread rolls with their fingers, but leaving the rolll in the basket. Ditto with fruit and certain vegetables. Coughing as they progress along the line. Yuk!

I'll stick to my way thanks very much.

@Kathie<<<If LL believes he can tell visually whether food is contaminated, there is nothing anyone can say that will dissuade him.>>>

Of course I don't know whether the food is contaminated or not, nor have I said that. Passing a visual test is exactly that, passing a visual test.

Do you know with absolute certainty that wherever you eat there isn't a possibility of contamination or poor hygiene? There's plenty of evidence on Google of dodgy food or hygiene at some very exclusive restaurants. Just because somewhere has a 5* rating doesn't mean anything if you're served with a dodgy bit of food which lays you low for a day or two.

LL I think the point is that though you can get a gi bug in any eating establishment it's pretty clear that the better restaurants are drilled to maintain strict hygienic standards. We all know there is no absolute certainty except death and taxes but we are talking about minimizing risk. I'll go my way. That has worked. I don't agree with your "eye test" assessment and think it's more risky but that's you and you surely have that right.

Best of luck. .

Larry.

So I asked my friend who is in BKK now about those certs being posted on carts or stalls that have met the standard we were discussing above. Here is her reply:

"Nope, m not aware. Have not seen any certs or signs of any kind so far."

BTW I will post a link to her blog for your perusal. Its pretty cool.

How do thousands of tourists every day of the year assess whether a street food stall is fit for their custom? Yep, they do an "eye test", and either move on if it failed the "eye test" or move in and enjoy some delicious street food.
