A post above asking for BKK restaurants got me to think what about the small, inconspicuous places that have really good food, authentic food. When I watch the traveling chefs Bourdain and Zimmern they always seem to find small places, even street stalls that have geat food. I remember stopping at some little shack halfway between Mo bay and Ocho Rios that has great, great jerk meats. This is the sort of place I am looking for. Any ideas? Thanks!

sorry, I don't do street food as I am concerned about hygiene in those places, but I am sure it is authentic and very good...

There are a couple of food tours in Bangkok that will take you to little hole-in-the-wall places and street stalls. As I remember the places are in Chinatown for one tour and in the Sathorn area for the other. Do a search here to find the details.

Mrs. Balbir's for Indian food. Soi 11/1. Just a few steps into that soi, on the right. An Indian friend took us there because it is his fave on Bangkok.

We were on Bangkok in February and went to several Fodor's suggested restaurants but this was not on any list...ZANOTTI it is upscale gourmet Italian as after 3weeks in Asia we were ready for a change.This is a 5* restaurant with 3* pricing. White tablecloths, waiters and amazing food and service. Mostly locals dresses great and celebrating. Also great wine. Skip dessert as they give you something. We had no desire anyway as we had already eaten way to much

1ladyrep - I love Zanotti as well and it's also a favourite restaurant for many people here but it's not on Sukhumvit road as per the OP's chosen location.

I think my favorite in that area would be Gedhawa. It's tucked back in Suk. 35 so it's not that far from Emporium, but nobody seems to know about. Food is mostly Northern Thai, and some of the best of that cuisine that you'll find in Bangkok.

Carol, no, I've decided to stay in the US. I still love Bangkok and Thailand, but after >20 years living in Bangkok, it's fair to say a bit of the shine has wore off. My mother's illness and passing forced a bit of a re-think and I realized it was time to come home. I'm sure I'll be back from time to time.

Michael, I remember you said your mother was ailing. I hope her passing was peaceful. I have no doubts that she was happy to have you there. My sympathies to you and your family.

You'll have to be like our friend Mike from the US Embassy in BKK, who retired and moved to Florida, but visits BKK for about 6 weeks at a time, maybe a couple of times a year now.
