Beijing Hutong walks 2006--details offered
Back sometime in 2000 or 2001, I think, I posted an offer here to forward accounts of two walks around Beijing's back lanes (hutong) to anyone who wanted them, and I think about 300 people asked for copies before the posting finally dropped off the list somwhere.
Towards the end of 2002 I offered a revised version of the walks noting various changes, and offering more information on some of the buildings to be seen on the walks.
This again received nearly 300 other requests before dropping well down the list again, to the point where I ceased to visit this site. But in the last few months requests have picked up again, although some have pointed out (quite rightly) that they expect much change between 2002 and 2006.
But I walked the same routes again in mid-December 2005, and I've now added further notes on changes discovered, and added extensions to the walks, too. It's now a rather untidy account, but that untidiness gives away something of the massive changes overwhelming the city in the last few years, and which by the 2008 Olympics will see most of the city's traditional housing destoyed.
For now, though, these walks are still walkable, and I'm happy to offer the revised file to anyone who posts a request here, along (as people tend to forget) with an email address to which I can send it.
With best wishes to all China travellers,
Peter N-H

I'd love to have your updated account. I used your previous one during my 2004 visit, it was so helpful.

I have the walks as you posted them in 2001 on Oriental-List as well as various subsequent comments by you and others through about July of last year. If you have updated the walks since then, I would very much like them. Please send to Mediatorr at Yahoo dot com.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Peter,
As I'll be with a tour group, I don't know if I'll have time, but I'd love a copy to look over in the event I get some free time. Thank you!
