The Nancy Chandler map is also quite helpful for this.

A few more questions that I could not figure out from their website:
We will be using the river taxis while we are in Bangkok. I am on your website look, ing at the map and farss and have a few questions.
1) If I board at Central Pier and get off at #8 Tha Tien – what will be my fare and will this apply to both the local and express boats?
2) if I board at #8 Tha Tien and want to get off at #30 Nonthaburi what will be my fare and does this apply to the local and express boats
3) Does the local boat have a white flag?
4) How long does it take to go from Central Pier to #30?
5) How do we pay- do we just be seated and someone will come by and collect the fare? If so how do they know how far I am going in order to charge the right fare.

The fare depends on the number of stops between where you got on and where you get off, and I'm not sure the Express Boat's web site is up to date. Fares have spiraled up over the last few years, and I think the fare from Central to Tha Thien was closer to 20 Baht the last time I took it. Also, there's a tendency for the conductors to charge Farang 20 or 25 Baht no matter where they're going.
You get on, grab a seat if one is available, and the conductor will come along to collect the fare. Keep your little receipt in case there's a checker on board. They check tickets frequently (about 1 trip in 5 in my experience).
Local boats have no flags.
The trip to Nonthaburi is about an hour. It's a nice way to spend half a day. I've done it a couple times for no particular reason.

i've taken that one hour boat ride to nonthaburi, thinking i was going to have a pleasant lunch when i got there. well, after an hour of pitching and rolling, i was green when i stepped off the boat, and lunch was the last thing i was thnking about.
i just walked around town, and took the boat back.
