Patumwan House is about $25 to $30. It is a serviced apartment "hotel" within easy walking distance to MBK. There is no pool, but the rooms are very clean and the staff is very nice. There is a small restaurant in the lobby with a tasty but small menu.

Oh if you stay there and do something they deem ileagle you'll be spending a long vacation in thailand. "miscreants are reported to the police without advance warning".

My daughter spent a few days at the ASiA hotel in August. $36 US a night. The Skytrain lands on the second floor of the hotel and there are lots of shops inside.
She was grumbling about it compared to her previous stays at the Old Bangkok Inn and the Sanctuary in Koh Pha Nagan) but I think it would be hard to compare to either of those- especially immediately afterwards!
Their room was really big with two double beds and there was quite a big bathroom. The beds were comfortable, there was a decent city view and the TV worked well. Clean too.
The bedding and accessories were nice, although somewhat dated. I thought it was a very nice value for the money.

I just posted the information for Patumwan House on your new thread if you will check there. I will have to get back to you with information on a driver in Chiang Mai. My son has the phone number of Jit, who always drives us around for about 1000 baht per day.
