In my experience, it is a very rare taxi driver who can read a map, so the map is more for you than the taxi driver. Note that Somboon has several locatons.
There was a post here a couple of years ago about a couple who where taken to a different restaurant than what they asked for by a taxi driver. So it does happen. But it's a ununsual scam. And it could be any restaurant, not just Somboon.
Really, in all of my trips I've not had problems with taxi drivers. On my most recent trip, we did have a taxi driver who took us to the wrong hotel, but he was just confused and the kind people at the Sukothai gave him directions.

ekscrunchy - just saw this but I think you already have my Chote Chitr info - also we had a really good meal at Coconut Palm near Wat Po (a favourite of Tong's - you're meeting up with her - right?).
Can you point me to any Barcelona restaurant suggestions of yours - just read you're *famous* on the Europe board for Spain recos! We leave in 10 days for Egypt/Jordan then 2 months in BCN.
Have a wonderful trip - say hi to Ta from us (and Tong and Dara if appropriate!)

Elizabeth..You are off on an adventure, too! I have Jordan on my list for the future. As for Barcelona, I have not been in about 6 years and the last time I was there (for a week) I ate most of my meals (sometimes lunch and dinner on the same day) at Cal Pep which ranks up there with my favorite restaurants in the whole world. But you know it is counter only and they do not take reservations. And it has received so much press in the past few years that I am afraid there might be many tourists... But try to go an an off hour; you must try at lest once. Also, Pep has a more formal restaurant that you can reserve...if the whole lining up and sitting at the counter does not appeal, you could try that..
I think the food scene there must be just spectacular nowdays..truly you probably have many options...please let us know how you fare (with the fare..sorry for that!!) And many many thanks for all of your help. I am meeting Ta next week and Tong in a few days (can this be true??) and I will fill everyone in when I return...

Face
Mezaluna
Sacz
Neil's Tavern
Beirut
Aldo's
Matteo
Crepes & Co

If you want great Thai food with entertainment and a crowd that is 99% Thai, Tawan Dang on Rama 3 is my favorite by a long shot.

Actually you need to be very careful about Somboon Seafood, there was a post here around Xmas time... entitled something like I &#*#&@ HATE BKK & a NY man on business, sent his younger brother & sister out in a cab & the DRIVER took them to the fake one... very similar name, they had lunch & were charged $400. The NYer went back to confront them, called the police, the owners chased him with a spiked board... anyway, the scam is the prices on the menu are PER GRAM... although it doesn't say per gram on the menu... which means you have a good chance to fight it on your CC, but when you question the tab, that is what they say "price is per gram"...
So, if you're going to go to Somboon, get the exact address written in Thai & English from your hotel... and get them to order you a cab, or you may end up at this other Somboon... as they have the same name... w/ a slight difference... check for the NYer's post to read the gory details. There's also a website dedicated to BKK Scams & this has happened to hundreds of tourists...

How nice of you to put a link to my blog here. Thank you. I didn't end up posting anything new there about Bangkok from our last trip because we didn't really have any outstanding meals. However, I know how much you like Rome and I have some of my more recent Rome dining experiences there and I'm about to do a post just on Rome Markets. My new favorite, the Andrea Dorea market is thanks to your recommendation. You can sign up for email updates so you don't miss it if you want. Or come say "hi" on my new Facebook Fan Page (link on blog).
