You can take whatever you can carry. But keep in mind that you will need to carry it.. You won't find porters, and there will often be lots of steps. There is usually room to stash bigger bags behind the last row in each car, or you can put smaller things above, on your lap or under your feet. We usually carry a medium wheeled bag and a backpack or smaller bag each.
japan also has a great system for luggage transfers between different hotel, cities or airports. Costs about $US20 per bag.

Yes, we are cruising into Osaka after a long time in Asia and I'm torn between staying in the Kyoto area and flying home from Osaka, or trying to make it to Tokyo and flying from there.
All the luggage we have is a considerable concern.
