Applying for visa to Turkmenistan and giving up my passport

We are interested in a tour to Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan thru Overseas Adventure travel. In reading the fine print I read this statement "Expect to be without your passport for the three months prior to your trip. Also, your passport may not be returned to you until two weeks before your departure. This is normal for Turkmenistan; they just work at a slower pace."
I am reluctant to give up my passport for as much as 3 months. The tour company rep was unable to confirm nor deny that 3 month possibility.
Does anyone have recent experience that you can share?

Seems possible. But maybe you'd be better off with a tour company that specializes in the area. I used MIR for Uzbekistan and would use them again. I don't remember how long the visa application for Uz took, but it certainly wasn't fast.
