Apartment in Hanoi...wait till I get there OR rent before going???
I hope to go to Vietnam early Feb. '07 for 2+ months, basing myself in Hanoi and sidetripping from there. Has anyone rented an apartment there? Any specific recommendations on rental agents or locations in Hanoi to go for/avoid. Can I/should I, wait until I get there and shop around OR is it better to line up an apt. before going? Thanks much for your replies and ideas.

Kathygo, I don't think I've seen any trip reports on this board that involved a stay of more than a week in Hanoi, so I doubt that anyone here can help - I hope I'm proven wrong though. If it were me, I think I'd check into a hotel first and shop around. Have you tried searching the web to get some idea of locations and prices?

market in vn may be different from other asian countries. landlords need special licenses to rent to foreigners, so apartment complexes tend to be what we'd consider luxury--complete w/ swimming pools, on-site restaurant and grocery store, health club etc. they're rented to ngo and multinational expats.
if u don't mind a lack of luxury but can do w/ basics like cleanliness, private bath, hot water and air conditioning, u might consider a guesthouse or budget hotel. i did this when i first moved to ho chi minh city. owners will negotiate discounts for long-term stays, so u might spend $400-$600/month or even less, depending on room rates.
if u go this route, u can just book ur initial few days somewhere, then shop around when u get to hanoi.

Thanks so much for your replies. I've been on many, many websites and there seem to be many apartments available, even short term, in a full range of prices. Most seem to be in the hands of rental agents. It's deciding on the right one (location, etc.)that's the issue.
