hsbc did not charge me any fees for using their atms in singapore, and bangkok, but terrible exchange rate.(see my post of 10/14 & 11/19)

if it seems that the exchange rate is bad, it probably means they are just including the fee in the rate. that's what all banks used to do anyway. that's why the class action now.

I agree that the bad rate is due to adding the 3% foreign exchange fee. By law, they are supposed to show the charges, but I notice banks rarely do.

Interesting. I must be really lucky. I used my WaMu ATM everywhere in November (Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Hong Kong) and only got charged 1% of whatever I withdrew. No $2 fee or ATM withdrawal fee at all. This is what our bank manager explained would be the case and I'm happy to report it worked out just the way the promised.

You may want to check your Wamu statement. I got the $2 fee charged as a lump sum 3 weeks after the first ATM withdrawal. Look carefully on your bill. I almost didn't notice it. It may still show up if this was just in November, as that's when we went. It showed up just 2 days ago. It may also depend on whether you have the new or the old Free Checking account.
