$1000 in thailand

Hello, I am going to take my first trip to Thailand and have $1,000 for food, trans, and just having fun. The air and hotels I will throw on my credit card. Is 30 days to long or just about right? Please let me know... Thanks

Depends on your lifestyle. Many Thais live on $100 a month or less, so $1,000 can easily last a month if you want to eat & drink the basics.

But much of the food, entertainment, & activities aimed at tourists will require more money than that.

That looks about right to me. The budget traveller can getr by on about $30/day. My first trip to Thailand was one month, enough time to take a reasonably leisurely look at the North.

If all of your air and hotels are on your credit cards, $1000 will allow you to live pretty well. You won't be eating in top-flight restuarants, but it doesn't sounds like that is what you are interested in. That's $30 per day just for food and local transport, etc. Budget travelers can get by on the amount including the cost of a guesthouse.

where are you planning to stay and what kind of partying do you intend toi do.
ie: plan on clubing often or hanging out in bars

30$ is more then enough to have a good time. but not a crazy good time.

Bangkok suits all budgets from poor back packer to millionaire. There is plenty of cheap accommodation but Nov - March it goes fairly quickly so book soon. Make sure you get air conditioning. There are plenty of cheap eateries, Western and Thai food where you can eat for a few dollars. Try "SANTAS" in the centre of the ground floor of MBK (Mah Booh Krong).

Get a Bangkok tourist map (about 50 baht) which will help you use the local buses. Air-conditioned buses need a destination but normal buses don't and have a flat fare of several baht. The Skytrain is easy to use. Taxis are metered and cheap.

Take a Skytrain to Saphan Taksin and get off in the direction of the river. There is a ferry used by tourists there which for 18 baht you can spend upto 70 minutes on the boat going along the river, or you can get on and off at will.

Bangkok can be very cheap but there is lots and lots to buy there which certainly runs my spending up.

For cheap flights out of Bangkok :

Warning. I have found that my credit cards don't always work at ATM's in Bangkok. The companies want me to phone them (despite my telling them where I am going) and that is difficult from Bangkok. If this happens to you, go into a bank with your passport to get money.

If you only have one credit card, get another one for emergencies. If you don't use it it won't cost you and you can always return it when you get home.

Be careful of pick-pockets there.
