Not sure where is home for you, but you may be unfamiliar with the claims/reimbursement system in the US. You mentioned that the clinic wanted to bill directly. If they did direct billing, you have no way of knowing how they coded their claim. A single visit for an uncomplicated injury usually would not trigger the sort of follow up questions you describe.

ps Icuy - I see you have commented on other sites and defended Travel Guard. I do not believe your comments to be unbiased."</i>

Of course I'm biased! I have a serious medical condition, but make at least three international trips a year. I always purchase a TravelGuard policy that covers pre-existing conditions. TravelGuard not only gives me peace of mind, but they've given me great service!

I don't get any kickbacks or discounts from the company, but I think the fact that they pay their claims promptly is worth mentioning.

You on the other hand, are mad because you think they should have just trusted what you said. Sorry, it doesn't work that way. They wanted proof that this was not related to previous illness and in the end were able to verify that by speaking with your doctor.

You should be happy your claim was paid. Next time, get the pre-existing coverage so that past history will not be an issue.

BTW, surely there are more interesting ways to live your life than surfing the Internet seeking <i>"other ways to promulgate my dissatisfaction with Travel Guard"</i>.

just 6 weeks ago i was on leyte during the typhoon. i lost everything i had, clothing, netbook, almost everything i traveled with, almost 40 kilos of belongings, everything. we had little food, no electricity, water was dirty and had to be boiled. during the storm a sliding glass door imploded and cut me across the leg 6 inches long and 2 inches wide. the house flooded with water, debris and sewage. we had no phone service, and when the phones finally came back on they were dead,.. no way to charge them. when the flooding went down enough for my fiance to get out of the subdivision, it was the following friday. there were a few relief workers but little food and no medical assistance. she was able to charge a phone and call her sister in canada. her sister got us tickets on a flight to manila. we had to walk the 7 kilometers to the airport in tacloban city. there were some australian rescue workers, there who cleaned and fixed my wound, it had become infected. i had hoped to get my claim expedited, since the whole world knew of the disaster, and were sending help from all over the world. i had a school childs backpack with all i had left in it, dirty clothes, flip flops, and a few pair of bathing trunks. travelguard said that they would investigate it and would get back to me in 4 weeks. after that, they said further investigation was needed and would get back to me in another 30 to 60 days. im still waiting. if you are traveling abroad you would be better served to look elsewhere for your travel insurance needs. if a disaster like typhoon yolanda requires further investigation, after sending them 18 pages of recipts and paperwork, then you will have very little chance of compensation no matter what your disaster may be. i will pursue this matter relentlessly until i am compensated for my lost baggage. i would advise others to get more reputable insurance. im still waiting in manila.

Sorry to hear about your horrible experience. To give you some reassurance that your claim will eventually be paid I'll tell you my story with Travel Guard. Several years ago, I flew into JFK from Egypt. JFK was closed due to a blizzard, an hour before my plane was to land, and all flights out were cancelled.. My plane was diverted to DC where we sat on the tarmac for hours until JFK eventually opened, about 12 hours after my plane was originally due to land. Obviously I missed my connecting flight, had to pay for a hotel, taxi, ect. Even though the insurance company knew that the airport was closed(It was big news), they made me send in all sorts of documentation and letters from the airline to that effect. Eventually my claim was paid, but not without a lot of back and forth via letters, phone calls and emails. So I do think your claim will be paid, but you will need to send the insurance company the documentation that they require/request. Good luck.

In July, 2014, I purchased a policy with Travel Guard for Cancel for Any Reason. My trip was scheduled to take place on October 8th and I have a six and three year old, so I thought this was the prefect policy.

As will most situations when you have children, trip time came and I had to cancel, the hotel was not an issue but the flight insurance I had purchased turned out to be a nightmare.

Travel Guard issues policies under false pretenses. They claim cancel for any reason and then want to charge an additional 25% of your trip cost, the $350 premium wasn't enough.

From now on all policies will be purchased via American Express, I've had enough of jumping through hoops and responding to emails to get MY MONEY back.

VERY BAD BUSINESS PRACTICE. Will never buy again

saralove, Travel Guard's Cancel for Any Reason coverage is right up front that only 50% or 75% is covered/reimbursable. Granted it may have changed since July but they are bring straight today.

I hate to hear all this about Travelguard since I just insured a trip with them -- travel guard was recommended by both the tour company and my travel agent.

I do have experience with using travel insurance. I was booked on a trip to France in April 2010 (all flights to Europe cancelled due to the Icelandic volano). I had insurance through TravelMate. I am not sure how long it took, but I received a full refund (less deposit and cost of insurance)with very little hassle.

I realize this post was 9 years ago, but I'm going through an uncannily similar situation. I purchased travel insurance through travelocity - downloaded the policy during the checkout process, it states both Primary Residence and Destination being made uninhabitable as covered.

Dorian struck my destination in the Bahamas, and I filed a claim, only to have the adjuster tell me that my policy only covers Primary Residence and NOT the Destination.

I'm baffled... as I have a copy of the Travelocity policy... Yet, TravelGuard says I'm not covered... and shows me different information.

How did this pan out for you? Did they eventually pay on the policy?

Dittums - in the insurance claims arena, the first answer is almost always "no" and they count on a large proportion of people just uttering a few swear words and moving on. If you have the policy you received when you bought coverage - and though you bouoght it through Travelocity, you bought it from Travelguard - suggest you respond to that adjuster with a copy of the declarations page listing both residence and destination coverage. Keep it short and simple, something like "attached is the policy I purchased stating both destiation and residence are covered"

Let us know how it works out

We have had three or four claims paid 100% by Travel Guard. Why didn't book directly with them and not through Travelocity?

Pre-existing condition coverage

I'm in Canada and have a pre-existing condition. I have purchased Travel Guard platinum to cover my pre-existing condition. I have a claim related to my pre-existing condition for which I haven't yet filed. Travel Guard is requesting access to all my medical records as part of the claims process. Do I need to provide access to all my records given that the policy provides a waiver of pre-existing condition? It seems that there is no need to review my medical history if they don't need to determine whether or not the condition is pre-existing (it is). Can anyone recommend any other insurers that will cover pre-existing conditions (without the requirement for a 90-day stability period)?

Insurance companies need documentation to verify that the facts support your claim. Perhaps you disclosed a certain pre-existing condition but in fact had a second condition that you did not disclose which cased or may have contributed to the decision to cancel for trip, or perhaps you considered your condition stable for 90 days but you had a change of medication or some investigative test which suggests otherwise, or perhaps it was for another reason altogether that you cancelled your trip. The insurer will not just take your word that things are as you say they are and will look for reasons to deny your claim. I’m sure that the policy states quite clearly that it has the right to access your medical records in the event of a claim.

Out of curiosity I’ve just looked up the terms of my own insurance; it gives the insurer “the authority to obtain the Covered Person’s pertinent medical records of information from any Physician, Dentist, Hospital, clinic or service provider. “

I suspect there will be lots of paperwork in your future. Good luck, and I hope your health improves.

Thanks for your response. Yes, I should check what the policy says about requiring access to my medical history ... I suspect you’re correct. That said, the policy includes a “pre-existing condition waiver” - I didn’t have to declare the pre-existing condition; the policy simply states that it covers any/all medical emergencies as long as I’m considered fit to travel; there is no stability period... so it shouldn’t matter what my history shows. I suppose the only question should be whether it was an emergency, but that’s evident in the hospital report. Well, I guess I’ll find out how “invasive” this process is and how responsive Travel Guard is to claims...

We had to send Travel Guard medical notes from the doctors including surgical notes. It was a huge package for one large claim.
for another medical claim, the doctor had to fill in their form.
