I first heard about this back in 2006 when Airbus first announced it. The idea was roundly mocked and ridiculed, so they quickly denied it. Then last year Ryanair revived the idea again, to much less comment. Now here we go again.
Sad to say, I think they really are going to give it a shot.

No, it's silly season so even MO'L can get away with recycled claptrap.
There are many reasons - mostly involving the cost of recertifying aircraft why this isn't going to happen.
However it did take people's eye off the little fact that Ryanair have put up the charges for checked luggage during July & August so they can screw "The Hard Working Family"* even more

This is purely a publicity stunt. There's no way to certify standing positions for passengers and remain within the safety margins currently defined by regulators. And the regulators are not going to change the regulations just to accommodate an extraordinarily cheap airline to the detriment of safety.
Apparently Ryanair is resorting to increasingly bizarre and over-the-top claims in its quest for free publicity. I hope the airline is at least spending money on maintenance and crew salaries, but I have my doubts.

For sure this is a publicity stunt but it highlights issues behind low cost carriers. PASSENGERS DO NOT WANT TO PAY REASONABLE PRICES for tickets therefore airlines resort to other means to raise revenue and cover their operating costs.
$20 to fly Toledo, OH to Florida on any level is unreasonable. You get what you pay for and maybe soon on Ryanair and others it will be standing room only!

I'm regularly surprised by what people will tolerate in exchange for lower ticket prices. Price appears to be the one and only criterion of choice. Even safety doesn't seem to be important.
Proof of this is in parents who carry babies on their lap on board in order to save money on a ticket. In an accident, lap babies are killed, smashed against the seat or bulkhead in front of them, and the FAA—while not actually requiring separate seats for children under age two—very, very strongly recommends separate seats for this reason. But some people consider the lives of their children to be worth less than the price of a ticket.
Given that, it's not that hard to believe that people might be willing to fly standing in order to save a few more bucks.
