U. S. Air
What's new on the U. S. Airlines possible bankrupsy? They continue to have the best fares out of Philadelphia but I'm hesitant to make long term plans. Are they solvent now that they've undergone some mergers?

USAirways is still operating under Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Its merger with America West has been approved by almost everybody, so it should be a done deal.
While the combined airline will be called USAirways, it's basically a takeover of USAirways by America West, as it will be run by the AW team.
It's going to get enough funding to be around for a while.

Call me overly conservative, but I'm waiting for the merger to be approved by the America West shareholders and Bankruptcy Court before booking on USAir.
Partly this is because I'm looking at relatively costly vacation trips 4-6 months from now. For something domestic and sooner, I might be less cautious.

I would (and do!) feel safe booking with US Air. Their domestic routes will be cleaned up/made more efficient with the America West merger, and their international routes are already lucrative. I understand that they are making good money especially on their Caribbean routes. I will be flying them twice in September, and will likely be flying to london with them in november. and then more domestic flights throughout.
