SouthWest Airlines going out of business August 4th?
Is it true that SouthWest Airlines is going out of business on August 4th? They are not booking flights after then. Even Delta books out to 11 months, and they may fold later this month.

Based on recent experience, SW will release seats near the end of even-numbered months, for travel for the next 5.5 months.
This is the conclusion I deducted from some data that rb_travelerxATyahoo provided:
10/27/05 - book through 3/31/06
12/20/05 - book through 6/9/06
2/23/06 - book through 8/3/06
So, my guess that around 4/20 or slightly later, you will be able to book through early October.

Well thanks for the credit, rkkwan!
I just reported them as I encountered them, since I see the question asked a lot here and at www.fr___s.com. so I didn't really look for a pattern ... but your analysis looks good.
Getting the Ding notices is still the best way to stay on top of it, imo.

thanks all for your response. I guess we always booked when the window was open and didn't notice. But I need to book for an August trip; if they don't open soon my "revenue" will have to go to another airline. [Clio: "they aren't going anywhere"- funny!]

I never hear the Southwest Bashers complain about the reduction in fares ("the Southwest Effect" when SW comes to an airport. Maybe their Favorite Airline doesn't drop fares to SW's level, but the fares always drop significantly. If for no other reason to welcome SW, isn't just having us "steerage" using your so-called "Greyhound of the Air" worth a compliment?

Considering that my airfares were lower when I lived in a SW city and that the SW employees actually seem to LIKE thier jobs. (Have you watched DL employees lately? If they smile thier face breaks) I miss SW!!! (They don't fly to Atlanta!
SW also has the best cancellation rules in the business... So for those of you who hate them, you may eat those words. They are also the only ones in the black... how long can your airline bleed red ink?

Southwest got thorugh 9/11 without being hurt like the others were, I'm sure they'll handle the rising fuel costs like champs as well. I agree that they have the best policy in the sky when it comes to cancelling and exchanging tickets. When I'm deciding with whom to fly, that policy often tips the scales for me.
