Singapore Airlines First v Business (nice dilemma)

I am holding seats on SQ flight between Singapore and Melbourne for October using airmiles (on 747 service not the newer 777 series 300 service). I could get 1 F class and I business class and hope that another F seat appears before October(as SQ only seem to release 1 F class seat for redemption at any time). Worst case scenario is one of us goes first and the other business (or I guess try and change F seat back to business nearer time if nothing appears) which I am fine about but travelling partner not wanting to run risk of being split. Is there a big difference in seat/service to justify trying for it (and argue about who goes F class if it does not work out!) and what are the realistic chances of SQ releasing another seat for redemtion of points in F class prior to departure.
Thanks

If you choose to split seats against your travel companion's wishes then there shouldn't be any argument about who gets the F seat, if you do end up split. That choice should be up to your travel companion.

On that route you could be lucky, I've always done quite well on SQ Australia flights for point upgrades, Sydney tends to get a lot of Business and First Class but I doubt MEL gets that much in F.
