SFO to FCO, FLO to SFO
Want to go to Rome from SF bay area in May, 09 and return from Florence. Any suggestions for preferred airline or are all about same? I found good connections on United but total fare for 2 is $2708. I'm trying for at or under $2k. Am I dreaming?

Way too early to get good fares for late spring. LH is having a one day sale TODAY ONLY, but you have to travel before April 2. I don't think you're going to see any deals before Jan. Under $2K should be very realistic.
Our last trips to Italy (and Germany the year after that) were on LH and found them to be quite nice. We also flew into Rome and out of Florence. Good service, very decent good, free drinks, snacks in between meals. IFE isn't great on their A340s (no individual screens), but that wasn't at the top of our lists.

Be careful with United\ LF. Be sure its a LF flight not a LF shared with United. LF service is far superior.
United you get a so so meal and pay for everything else except water and soda. LF is the way to go.
Also if you must transfer through Frankfurt be sure to allow at least 1+ hours it is a zoo with many checkpoints between terminals.
