SAS - Business vs. Economy Extra - EWR/CPH

SAS - Business vs. Economy Extra - EWR/CPH

Planning a trip to Copenhagen this year, and undecided about whether it's worth it to pay for Business class on this route vs. Economy Extra (about $1500 difference RT). If anyone has experience with either - or both - would you please comment? Thanks, and "Alles Gut!"

Economy Extra is nice, but I don't find it the most comfortable seat for sleeping. Service is pretty good, though.

Business class is good, with the sloped, but flat beds. Pretty similar to the Lufthansa seats, if you have flown them. All in all, a good, but not mind-blowing business class.

If the savings aren't overly important, I'd probably go business class, but $1500 is nothing to sneeze at.

You could also look at Continental. They have just kicked off a business class fare sale for the summer. They are in the process of installing fully flat beds that are getting positive reviews. I think something like 80% of the 757s that they use to CPH are converted.

Thank you - I have booked SAS Business Class. Continental was more than double for my dates of travel!

Thank you! We're still putting the trip together, but it includes Radisson Blu Royal (Arne Jacobsen) hotel, Royal Danish Ballet one evening, and - perhaps - a day trip to Fynen, as one part of my family immigrated to the USA from there.

Do you have one or two favorite, moderately-priced, Danish/Scandinavian restaurants with good food and lots of atmosphere?

Bear in mind that moderately priced is relative. Dining out in Copenhagen ranges from expensive to very expensive.

At any rate, here are some favorites that aren't completely in the stratosphere:

http://www.restaurant-koefoed.dk/ - This one is on the higher end of the range, but I absolutely love this place. Great food. Very good service. The menu is very 'current' and shares some stuff stylistically with some of the really top-end places (noma, etal) that have given Copenhagen its reputation for food right now.

http://madklubben.info/ - A group of restaurants that offer good value. You choose x number of courses for a fixed price. The original is Bistro de Luxe and is good, solid Danish cooking. I've also eaten at Madklubben Steak, which is also good, but not particularly Danish.

http://www.fiskebaren.dk/en/ - Great fish and a very hip, industrial atmosphere in the meatpacking district. Can get pricey, though.

http://www.aamanns.dk/ - This place might have the best reputation for smorrebrød in the city right now. They also have a restaurant that serves a very limited menu, but which is very good. They have a midweek dinner special that includes wine for DKK 495.

http://www.restaurantoubaek.dk/page/show/id/8 - Very good food. It is a small plates concept, so you get to try a lot of stuff. The room is a bit cramped, though.

Those are the ones off the top of my head. I struggle to think of places that offer a good sit-down type atmosphere and good food that are appreciably cheaper. There are cafes, most of which offer pretty good food, but they aren't really restaurants in terms of service, atmosphere, or the type of menu. And you still might be looking at over DKK 100 for something like a burger and DKK 65 or so for a starter or desert. Among the cafes, I like Dag H, but that is mostly because it is relatively close to me. Cafe Norden also offers decent (not great) food, and has an unbeatable location on the Strøget, so it is a decent choice if you are out shopping.

Note that Danes are planners and you should make reservations at most restaurants, particularly for weekends. One place that doesn't take reservations and is a good fallback choice (not Danish, though) is LeLe Nha Hang, but you will have to wait. Good Vietnamese food and even better cocktails:

I hesitate to recommend such an outrageously expensive restaurant, but... If you have a few hundred dollars to spare, I will recommend Geranium*. An absolutely amazing experience. Phenomenal food and even better experience. From the welcome in the lounge, to the gracious staff, to the course that is eaten in the kitchen (I had a nice conversation with the head chef on the merits of induction vs gas), it is what a 'destination' restaurant should be. And, yet, it doesn't take itself so seriously that it is above mixing in beer with the wine pairing. It is everything that is great about the New Nordic Cuisine and is probably the best restaurant inside a stadium anywhere in the world.

*Assuming you can't get into noma.

BTW, looking at the menu reminded me that you should be aware that Danish restaurants add a foreign credit card charge to your bill. It varies depending upon the card, but is between 1 and 3%.

Also, there is considerable debate among my Danish friends about tipping. Some say you do not need to tip, but a considerable number say that you should absolutely tip 5% at a full-service restaurant. Your call as to whether you tip, but definitely no need to tip more than 5%. For trivia purposes, I will offer that the term for tip in Denmark translates to 'drink money'.
