Royal Air Maroc - carry on

I know some of you have had experiences with RAM and I'm wondering if you'd have any insight on my question.

I am flying Delta from San Francisco (SFO) to New York (JFK), then changing airlines to Royal Air Maroc and flying on to Casablanca (CMN). I am only taking a carry on for this trip - a backpack. It's a normal sized school backpack, not those big long ones.

I know I can carry on the backpack with no problem with Delta from SFO to JFK because the bag is under Delta's dimension and weight requirements. My question is regarding Royal Air Maroc. I went on their website (which is in French, but thanks to the wonders of Babel Fish Alta Vista, I translated the page into English) and they say that passengers are limited to one carry on bag that cannot exceed 5 kilograms and 115 cm.

What if my bag is a little over 5 kilograms? Even if I pack light - and I mean Spartan strict light - I'll be cutting it close. Will they make me check my backpack from JFK to CMN? I'd be willing to pay an extra fee to be allowed to carry the backpack on, so I wonder if that's an option?

Thank you for any insight you may have. By the way, if you're wondering why I don't just do checked luggage, it's because I've had luggage lost and delayed on a few trips, and I swore I'd never check luggage again. It's a huge pain and I hate it.
