Refund on Delta Miles
I have tix booked on CO to Hawaii but have to make a change to the itinerary due to work.
My cheapest option is to leave 2 days later on a Delta flight, which is not non-stop, but at least first class. I do not plan to use the return ticket as I will be using my original CO return tix which will cost me $473 to turn my $450 (yes, $450 from EWR to HNL) into a one way. If I were to just change the date on my outbound on the CO itinerary, it would cost me $743.
The mileage leg that I would use on Delta is 37,500 from EWR to HNL through SLC 1st class, and 20K miles on the return.
Can I just call Delta and tell them I will not be using the return portion once I fly out and get the miles redeposited and pay the redeposit fee?
You ask why I don't book all the way through on Delta and take a credit on the CO tix - because the Delta itinerary gets me out the day i need to, but my return date is a month later + I hate delta and only would fly in 1st - I prefer CO.
Thanks!!

Thanks! That is what I was going to do - book on the lowest tier coach back unless I can get a 1st class both ways, if I can get that option on delta for 70K miles I will just voucher the CO tix.
I can't just change the route back, I have been able to do that on CO - I booked RT EWR-DFW, then changed the return to DFW-MSP, but changed the dates on it and just paid a change fee...that was years ago though.
Thanks!

ok different scenario - I was looking at it in reverse - I take my initial flight on CO and try to book a round trip back HNL-EWR. Would co refund me my unused O/W (if not, I am at least not paying to toss it, I just won't use it), and 2nd, can I re-route the EWR-HNL miles for EWR to another location? this would be using CO miles - 37,500 for HNL-EWR 1st class and 17,500 EWR-HNL coach?
thanks!
thanks!

They may refund your unused roundtrip, but it will almost certainly involve paying a fee AND possibly refare, which may leave with less than nothing.
And for your award ticket, it has to be same series both ways (i.e. between US and Hawaii), so you must at least spend 17,500 for the 2nd leg that you may not use.

I think that the OP misses something VERY vital.
If you do not get on the CO flight TO Hawaii, you will NOT be getting on the return (assuming you bought a round trip ticket) The ticket will be cancelled when you don't fly the first leg.

I decided to just change the outbound date and bump it to 1st class as it was (last night) the same price as I was initially quoted to change + there was a 500 mile bonus promo for changing a flight online and it is a J class flight so I will get 150% miles on that leg.
It all worked out in the end and I can still use the Delta to book now on CO for Dec./Jan.
rkkwan is correct - I am fully aware that they would have cxl'd my ticket if I did not board on the 1st leg.
