I am looking at an AA frequent flyer flight that lands at Gatwick and departs from Heathrow. How does one make the connection? Is there a shuttle bus or train? Is luggage transferred or does one collect bags and re-check them?

It's an ugly connection.

The easiest way is the bus run by National Express. Service is very frequent, but the ride can take 2-3 hours because of traffic. Costs about 20£. The train is not a great option because the Heathrow and Gatwick trains go to different stations in London.

You need to pick up, carry, and re-check your bags.

Gatwick to Heathrow is difficult and time consuming at best. Minimum of 3 hours and that's cutting it close (the trip itself takes about 45 to 60 minutes in light traffic - longer during rush hours) so most savvy travelers suggest you allow 4 hours. Transportation choices: National Express Bus(see links below for limit on luggage), taxi or Licensed Car Service. Train is possible but it's not direct so not best option.

Yes, you'll have to deplane, claim your luggage and clear Immigrations/Customs at Gatwick then recheck luggage and clear Security at Heathrow. Same procedure for return flight.

Personally, unless I was overnighting or spending a few days in London I'd pass on any connecting flights that have me changing airports.

The connection is not the least bit difficult or ugly (I've done it several times over the years)

You get on the express (comfortable) coach at LGW and get off at the applicable terminal at LHR. Very easy. But it IS time consuming. You need to allow 4+ hours.

Thanks, Janis. The deal breaker for me would be claiming and re-checking luggage and security at Heathrow. United airlines has a better route without all the hassles.

Of course not having to transfer between the airports is better.

I travel w/ <i>just</i> hand luggage and have done this a few times. W/ checked bags I'd want 5+ hours and be happier w/ 6.

I have done it with a checked bag in a bit over two hours, but it was mid-morning and security seems be taking longer these days. AA told mve to allow four hours.
