Predictions on airfares from SFO to Bali in mid June '11?
I am helping friends try and find tickets from San Francisco to Bali in mids June. These fares are through the roof now. The best deal being around $1,700 RT after taxes and fees for the cheapest economy tickets. They still have a good 6 weeks before the date of departure. Any predictions/suggestions on airfares? Thanks!

Airplanes use jet fuel, which comes from oil. I see the price at the gas station going up daily, so I would not expect any quick decline in airfares based on that fact alone.
In my opinion it's a little late to be looking for bargains - June gets into peak travel time for US families due to school schedules. Airplanes are fuller and airlines have no need to offer incentives at this stage of the game.

I would register with all the Asian airlines and sign up for email alerts. Cathy Pacific offers special every month and China airline is the less expensive of them all and is currently charging about $1800. Once you get to Asia, you can connect with really cheap airline like Air Asia. It's worth getting familiar with the Air Asia website now.

The fares look relatively cheap...but the 'taxes' and surcharges are around $700. Thanks for passing it on though. Keep it coming. However, at the end of the day, it may be another destination they go to.

The price you see as advertised is the total . Let's say $900 to Japan. The link shows the breakdown: 500 airfare+400 tax=total 900, I flew Singapore Air to Jakarta before, from Jakarta I flew Air Asia all over Asia, super easy. Air Asia offers tons of specials, sign up now.

>>>Is anyone GOING to Japan at the moment?<<<
(Well, happy to report that yours truly - and more than a few Japan business travellers - enjoyed two productive days of meetings not too many days back in tender Tokyo. Yes indeed, 'Japan Inc.' is open for business -- and the occasional nocturnal pleasure with kind hearted masseuses.)
Now, if not too late for OP, will add that all-time cherished Singapore Airlines continues to offer Bali promos flying ex-SFO. More info, via the fine singaporeair.com/ Always a pleasure, flying SIA from the Bay and back home to Singapore.
However you travel, have fun in fun-filled Asia.
