The OP's screen shot has two red arrows. I believe the first arrow - the straight one - is for the 1st leg from US-FRA and the second one - straight - is for the second leg, FRA-OLB.

If the 1st leg is upgraded then the graphic with the 2 people and the suitcase (I think) implies there is at least one free checked bag.

At checkin at JFK the bag(s) is going to be checked to OLB. The bag fee, if any, would be paid there. For the fare the OP paid, without upgrade, it would $75 for 1st bag and $100 for 2nd bag. Same for the checkin at OLB on the return.

With the upgrade to business on the first leg then I would expect the 2 free bags at JFK (because that graphic).

If only the second leg was upgraded then on checkin at JFK, with no bag allowance for that first leg JFK-FRA, I would expect to pay the checked bag fee(s).

>> will I have to pay extra bagage for the USA to Frankfurt flight?
yes, probably, at least you should definitely expect that. Best to call LH

No matter what you do for for upgrades for USA-FRA-OLB, it won't affect your bag allowance for the return from OLB to USA.

IOW, I believe that ugrading the second and/or third legs won't do any good as far as bag fees goes.

If you booked the ticket less than 24 hours ago then you could consider cancelling it (for a refund) and booking the economy fare that includes one checked bag. Better yet, just buy a premium economy fare for 2 bags and better seat/service.

Actually, I don't know for sure if the bags will be checked through from USA to Sardinia or not.

except that the bag fee rules I posed above apply for the trip from USA to Sardinia and the trip from Sardinia to USA. They are not per segment for four segments

Simplest way to understand: the rules/entitlements of the first leg apply to all legs.

... of each trip.

---
The OP has a roundtrip ticket consisting of two trips:
1) USA -> Sardinia
2) Sardinia -> USA

It would be a simple roundtrip if the two trips used the same USA airport.
It would be an open-jaw roundtrip if the two trips used different USA airports.

The baggage charges for each trip will be $75 for 1st bag and $100 for second bag.
