"Do not fly LAN!" Because driving to Easter Island is a good second choice?

I'm sorry to hear you had a bad experience. I love LAN, and for my travels within South America, I'll always go with them if that's an option. They have lots of fans over on the Latin America forum.

Maybe it's the Pacific flights that are bad or mediocre--not many airlines go to South American from Sydney so there's not a lot of choice, unfortunately.

I've flown with LAN twice to Brazil and they seemed to use the most outdated aircraft with the fewest amenities to go from Sydney to Santiago. Santiago to Sao Paulo (and vice versa) was a much better flight, better food, service etc.

Susan7,

I'll have to disagree about the equipment they use on the SCL-SYD route. LAN uses A343s. They acquired the planes around 2001. The 340 series didn't pan out as the most successful model for Airbus but it is a fairly new model with all the latest technology.

Hmm that's curious, the bit of technology that was missing on one of my four long haul flights was individual video screens and hence video on demand. I don't usually care that much, but after 16 or so hours...

I meant the planes are modern and fairly new. The backseat video is an option, not standard, so having it or not does not mean it's an outdated, old equipment.

I guess Susan7 can say that the plane has outdated IFE; but of course the book publishers around the world may disagree.
