Highest ground speed

Another proof that you can find any type of information on the web:

www.groundspeedrecords.com

A345 734kts (845mph). Wow!

And check out the photo of the old-school readout on the Concorde.

How did I know this would be an rkkwan post?

It's interesting b/c I just got into a conversation w/ a man at O'Hare last night who was reminiscing about the Concorde. I think he told me the groundspeed was something closer to 1,400 mph. I guess he was off a little bit?

1,200kts is 1,380mph.

I think tailwind is less a factor at 50,000 ft than at the the lower altitude regular airliners fly. So, that's close enough.

You're right! Close enough, indeed! I think I actually looked at the wrong column when I first checked out the site.

Damn! 1,400 mph! That ain't a snail's pace!

BTW, the fastest groundspeed I've seen on Airshow are:

711MPH (618kt) on a CO 772 IAH-LGW last December when we were over Kentucky.

710MPH (617kt) on a CO 764 EWR-AMS last September just east of Nova Scotia.

703MPH (611kt) on a CX 744 HKG-NRT 2 years ago, off the coast of Kyushu, Japan.

Pretty pedestrian...
