Hi, My conversttions today with BA and United might prove useful to those planning to travel to/through London.
I am traveling to Africa on Sept. from SFO. A trip of a lifetime. Photography is very important to me, as I know it is for many travelers, and I've been really getting excited about the trip.
I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw that Heathrow carry on restrictions had been eased a bit. I saw that electronic devices would be permitted again, but there was no mention of camera gear, so I called BA, the carrier with which I have my tickets, to ask for clarification. Turns out, BA is not allowing ANY carryon baggage from the US. Everything must be checked. I do not mind strip searches. I do not mind not carrying toothpaste, chapstick, etc., but we are always told to NEVER check camera gear for obvious reasons. Even worse, I still shoot with film, and have never had trouble with the carry on xray. However, checked baggage screening devices WILL destroy film.
I then checked with United Airlines. Their only restriction for carry on baggage is liquids.
Lets see. Carried on film can be xrayed. Cameras and lenses can be easily checked to see that they are operational and clear.
Bottom line: If you do not have your tickets yet from the US to/through London, and you have expensive, delicate electronic or camera gear, you might want to consider an alternative to BA.

Your conversation with BA rep is contrary to recently posted information on their web site, and the official British Dept of Transport web site. It looks like things will be calmed down by the time of your flight.

way calm down.....
Unless you camera bag is the size of an elephant itss permissable now, and by September it will be a guarantee (unless something happens again),
Through my personal experience when dealing with phone agents? don't believe 1/2 what they say, and the other 1/2 of what they know is actually only 1/2 accurate (most of the time).
This is the official word from www.ba.com:
