I'm assuming they won't be the only pants in the suitcase. And for only a couple of wearings, one probably need not wash them, or can get by with rinsing out, as Monty Python characters used to say, the nasty bits. I take 2, 1 to wear & one to wash.

Back to liquids.
Data point: I just cleared screening at Gatwick South. My bag (not me) was sidetracked for hand screening, apparently because of my iPad. While I was waiting my turn, I was able to watch others, and I saw a number of people who were sidetracked because of not meeting the liquids standard. They were handed a correctly sized plastic bag, and anything that wouldn't fit, or was oversize, was confiscated. (One woman had four partially filled plastic bags...) The poster with the gallon bag would not have made it through.
Further data point, initial screening was old style metal detectors, yeah! Also, Gatwick has a nifty automatic bin return system, and a new queueing set up which means that at most you get stuck behind one slow person. Even with extra screening, I made it from my Horley B&B to the departure lounge in half an hour.

Also, not everyone washes their clothes in the sink, lol. Hotels have laundry service. Or you could bring more than one pair of pants, for pete's sake. There is no need to stuff all of your possessions into that quart ziploc, although I'm sure janisj could show you how.

Of course not. I'm a big fan of laundromats, a cultural experience and definitely off the beaten path, as so many say they're wanting. My trips are long enough that I have the time to entertain myself for a couple of hours doing laundry with fun locals, and they always are.

Washed a load of laundry today at the agriturismo, laying them out to dry. Part of the rhythm of life and getting off the fast track. The travels the undies was up in the sink just fine.
Ended up with recently purchased Levi blue jeans, which will be useful for mosaic workshop, though they are damn hot meanwhile.
Brought more than I need, despite using small carry on. What was I thinking bringing 3 long sleeved tops to Italy n early Sept?
Happy to report that jeggings are ceding ground to straight leg leans.
The 1 qt bag was plenty. Will hav to buy contact lens fluid at farmaca outing. I've happily consolidated 311 bag and regular toiletries until return flight.

Honestly, if it's going to be a long trip I usually don't do just a carry on. However, if I am unable to take the necessary liquids with me, then I buy what I need at a local grocery store. So usually I take small amounts of liquid for my contact solution and make-up/face care and then just buy body wash, etc.

Half my jeans are black. However I don't use laundry hotel services because I find them too expensive and I don't go to laundrymat because I don't associate it with holiday. I've had my share when I was young and I've other interests now.
So I schlep big luggage. ;-)

Reflections on this thread: I have seen the qt. ziploc enforced at MCI and LGA in the US. I have seen people take all kinds of things through security that aren't allowed. I have had my perfectly allowable corkscrew confiscated 3 times but passed by more times.
I now often check one bag because I'm short and not as strong as when I was when younger so lifting the bag into the overhead is difficult. I also don't like schlepping bags around the airport. I carry on a small tote that fits under the seat. I use 3.4oz containers for my liquids (if they go in my carry on tote or checked) because I keep a "go bag" since we take off for long weekends on a whim.

I have seen the 1 Qt. bad rule enforced internationally too.
My Purel, which met US TSA standards, was held up by an agent within China for all on line to see with comments about what I was sneaking onto the plane.And they give out those 1 Qt. bags in some European airports.

I think, suze, it's the old story of people laughing, rather than trying to understand, when others have different ways of doing things. It seems to me to indicate lack of imagination more than anything else.
